It’s time to pack up and make the trek to your new home. Here comes the hardest part of moving, choosing what to leave behind! Here are some things to think about when it comes to filtering through all of your possessions. It can be difficult to decide what holds value, what is necessary, what has a special place in your heart and what you can toss. Let’s face it: you can’t take it all!
Here are a few tips to help you through the process.
Choose Wisely
Moving takes a lot of work! If you are going to the trouble of packing it, boxing it, loading it, driving it, unloading it and finding somewhere to put it, you better love it! Not only is moving hard, it costs money. It costs gas, boxes, packing peanuts and more. Choose to leave the stuff you just live with and bring the things you can’t live without.
Use It or Lost It
If the thoughts, “I might use this again someday” or “I could fix this, it might still work” or “It’s always good to have a back-up” enter your head, it’s junk. If you don’t use it, lose it. A good way to decide how valuable something is to you is how frequently you use it. Not needing something for more than 6 months means that you probably can live without it.
Out with the Old
You’re starting fresh, why not let go of some junk? It can be hard to part with some of those keepsakes, but be ruthless. It really can be difficult to let go of memories of the past like your grown children’s toys.
Hold on to a few things that really have sentimental value, shed a few tears for the rest and chuck it. Moving gives you a chance to look back and appreciate all of the great experiences you’ve had. Let go and move on!
In with the New
How fun for you to get a whole new lease on life, literally. Look forward to the future with excitement and imagine that right along with your new place and new adventures, you will find new things to fill your home. A few years in a new place will bring a whole bundle of new decorations and keepsakes. Make room for your new life in your new place.
Packing is a pain, don’t make it any harder than it already is. See moving as a chance to de-clutter, throw out the past and get a fresh start for the future! Make your move easier by lightening your load both mentally and physically.
