Spring Is Back!
Spring is generally dreaded as the time of the big spring clean of your home. Although spring cleaning can take time and effort, there’s no reason to dread it. If you take it one step at a time and create a checklist, you’ll feel less overwhelmed as you undertake this task.
Although you might be familiar with spring cleaning basics, many of your home appliances require special attention. Here’s a handy guide on how to clean them.
Degrease Your Stove & Oven
1. Clean between the glass.
Remove the drawer below the stove. Using a rubber band, attach a Windex pre-moistened wipe to the end of a wire hanger. Lie down on the floor so that you are looking up at the bottom of the stove door, and you’ll see open slots.
Slide the wire hanger into one of the open slots and scrub the surface of the glass. It might take two or three cleaning tries to get all of the grime, but the result will be a streak-free shine.
2. Clean the burners without serious scrubbing.
The best way to remove the burnt-on grime is to put ¼ cup of ammonia in a Ziploc bag with the burner. You don’t want to soak the burner in the ammonia, but through the plastic bag, the ammonia fumes will clean the burner. Leave it overnight and wipe it off in the morning with a sponge.
3. Clean the floor of the oven.
There are many ways to clean the inside of your oven but the most environmentally friendly way just takes a few simple ingredients. Cover the floor with a layer of baking soda. Make a squirt bottle of white vinegar and squirt it over the baking soda. Let the solution sit for about 20 minutes.
Scrub in a circular motion with a scrubbing pad and the grime will come right off! Wipe dry with a rag.
Wash Your Washing Machine
It may seem a little strange to clean a machine that washes your clothes, but in order for the washing machine to perform better, it needs to be cleaned annually.
Fill the washing machine and put in two cups of white vinegar. Let it sit for one hour, then run it for a full cycle. When done, wipe down with a sponge. Repeat this process a second time, except instead of using white vinegar, use bleach.
While you are waiting one hour for it to soak, scrub all the nooks and crannies with a sponge and Q-tips if necessary. Your washing machine will be transformed!
De-lint Your Dryer
Getting the lint out of your dryer is a two-step process.
Remove the lint trap in your dryer and use the nozzle attachment of your vacuum to suck out any dirt or lint that made it past the lint trap. You should also scrub the lint trap with warm soapy water.
Remove the exhaust from the back of the dryer, where lint needs to build up. Use your hands, a brush, and a vacuum to get rid of the lint. This will minimize the risk of accidental fires.
These are just a few ideas to keep in mind as you begin spring cleaning your home. Deep cleaning should also be done before a big move. This will make moving easier on you and the movers, especially if you take the opportunity to de-clutter as you clean.
